Nodding Off

28/07/2026

My eyes slowly flutter closed as i begin to drift away. A familiar feeling envelopes my body. A lovely tiredness. I'm swallowed by a pitch black void of lonely poppies.

And there you are.

Or at least, the shape of you is there. You're just an outline in this unending darkness. A shadow within a shadow and the feeling of a presence in front of me.

You're drunk.

I can tell because of the way you seem to lean into me like gravity pulling you into obit. You would always hold me when you drank. I wish you would hold me now. You're right there but you're still so far away. I miss the smell of beer on your breath that tinged my nose when you pull me close. Then you're curled up in front of me and even though we dont touch, it feels like a hug.

We never touch.

Everything is quiet. Then I hear some far off mumbling. It's you. you speak to me. i dont know what you're saying but I feel loved.

I know in this moment everything is okay.

Everything is right.

Then I'm back here. in my bed.

You're gone. no presence. No shadow. No mumbling.

I cuddle a plushie that lies next to me on the bed. A green rabbit. She hangs loose in my arms and i squeeze her tighter so she knows she's loved.

I wish you knew as well.

It's dark still. Night time.

I'm alone.
